Downtown York Things to do FAQ’s

The city of York boasts some of the most stunning and attractive ancient landmarks in England. It is renowned as a Cathedral City because its origins were primarily built around its still standing cathedral. Dating back before Roman times, York now contains a very modern population and moderate population of about 200,000 citizens.

Once inside the city centre, especially the old city area, it is very easy to see the sites by foot. Most of the heart of the city is pedestrianised, so only walkers and emergency vehicles are able to access the heart. York City Centre hotels are generally situated a few minutes on foot from many amazing attractions.

Does York offer tours?There are so many tours offered in the downtown area of York, and in the outer areas of York too. Visitors can choose from daytime walking tours, to boat tours, to special tours that are only available at night! (more on this last tour a little later)

What are the most popular tours available?There are several really popular tours available at the tourist information counters around the city centre. Probably the most famous tour in the city centre is the Walking the Roman Wall tour. Tourists can take walking tours of the medieval city wall that circumnavigates parts of the city. This enables tourists to see that history of the city, and one of the most beautiful structures in northern England. In addition to the walking wall tours, there are several open bus tours that provides tours around the downtown area, stopping at many of the major attractions of York.

How about for budget travellers?Walking tours are the cheapest form of touring the city. There are usually free, and occur several times a week. Departing spots and times differ, so it is best to visit the tourist information centres around the city for information. Having said this, the open bus tours and others that cost money usually don’t go over a few pounds for several hour tours anyway.

How can tourists get around?Tourists can get around is on foot, or take the bus tours that are available. In addition, bicycles are available for rent, which offer expedient and convenient forms of transport for tourists. It is recommended that tourists don’t drive while visiting the city centre of York.

Are there any festivals in town?There are plenty of festivals held throughout the year. Some of the more popular events include the Festival of Food and Drink, Traditional Dance Festival, Viking Festival, Beer and Cider Festival and the Early Music Festival. Don’t forget about the York Races too.

When are they held?During the month of July, the Early Music Festival is the main event that takes places. September sees the Traditional Dance festival and the beginning of the Food and Drink Festival. The St. Nicholas Fair and Christmas Event is held in late November/early December, and the Viking Festival occurs every February.

What can tourists do after dark?After dark, there are plenty of things visitors to the centre of York can experience. Pubs and clubs are found almost everywhere, but especially in the Micklegate district and along Coney Street. There are also several cinemas located in the downtown area. Finally, there are the famous Ghost Tours to think about too. Guided tours of the many haunted structures are available, scaring the wits out of people several nights a week.

Is shopping possible?Shopping is also something that tourists can do. The Shambles is the most important shopping area in the city, as it is crisscrossed with narrow lanes filled with retail stores. The high street area is also worthy of mention.
