There are some delightful districts in Lisbon and deciding where to stay in the Portuguese capital could prove difficult for some jetsetters who want to experience as much of the city as possible during their stay.
Culture vultures eager to see some of the township’s examples of architecture might prefer to book a room in a hotel in Estrala, which is home to the landmark Basilica.
Featuring twin bell towers and a rococo dome, this neoclassical monument was originally constructed in the second half of the 18th century.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Lisbon will come across a number of beautiful statues of saints and can even take a tour up to the top of the dome for some incredible views of the city.
Don’t forget to head to the local park, just across from the Basilica. There’s a small lake, with trees and exotic plants and a gazebo that is used as a bandstand, as well as a cafe that can offer refreshments to thirsty tourists in need of a sit down after exploring the Basilica.
However, the Chiado district could be appealing for any fashionista heading to Lisbon with the aim to do a bit of shopping while on holiday.
Here, they will find luxury stores such as Hermes and Cartier in which to flex their credit cards, as well as some old theatres, bookshops and cafes – the perfect combination of traditional and modern.
Shoppers eager to soak up a bit of culture as well will find statues of literary figures like Luis de Camoes, Eca de Queiroz and Fernando Pessoa, while some fine porcelain can be discovered at the Vista Alegre shop.
More artistic souls might be keen to find some accommodation in Bairro Alto. This is the bohemian heart of Lisbon and dates back to the 16th century, typically being the haunt of local artists and writers.
Night owls will also love this particular quarter, as it comes alive once the sun sinks below the horizon. Globetrotters can take their pick from some delightful traditional and international restaurants, purchase souvenirs at one of the alternative shops in the area or sip on some tasty cocktails at the funky bars that open their doors at night.
While some great views of Lisbon can be seen from the Basilica, a panoramic vista can also be found by heading down one of the main streets in Bairro Alto – either Rua do Norte, Rua da Atalaia or Rua do Diario de Noticias.
These will take travellers to the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara, a garden terrace that could be perfect for a day out. Make time to see some of the old churches in the area as well, such as Sao Roque and Carmo Church.
